Saucy Shaka is a hot sauce company based in Maui, Hawaii. The hot sauces are homemade and include only the freshest and most organic ingredients. I was given the task of creating a brand guide for the client to choose from and once approved, I would develop the packaging of their three flavours: Hot Hawaiian, Spicy Wahine and Da Spicy Green. I researched the hot sauce business globally and central to Hawaii and developed a brand guide to suit them.

The Process

I first researched all hot packaging globally and regionally within Hawaii to get a feel for the industry. I then crafted three logos that had a Hawaii flair but kept up with its competition. See my design notes for more details.

I noticed most global brands had engaging typography, were graphic-centric and many used gradients in their designs.

I drew inspiration from the Los Calientes brand with a think typeface and accompnaying shadow.

The Assets

With my knowledge of packaging through my packaging design course at OCAD University, I created three packaging designs for their three flavours. I also crafted corporate letterhead, business cards, and t-shirt merchandise and icons/favicons for online marketing. The Shaka was a focal point with this project as it is a staple of Hawaii. The ‘Shaka’ sign means ‘hang loose’ in Hawaii.
